The Complete End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist for Tenants

Moving out? Use our comprehensive end of tenancy cleaning checklist to maximise your chances of getting your full deposit back.

Why end of tenancy cleaning matters

Deposit disputes are one of the most common issues between tenants and landlords in the UK. Cleaning is the single most frequent reason for deposit deductions. A thorough end of tenancy clean, done properly, gives you the best possible chance of receiving your full deposit back.

Kitchen checklist

The kitchen is typically the most inspected room. Make sure to: clean the oven inside and out (including grill pan and racks), degrease the hob and extractor fan filter, clean inside the fridge and freezer (defrost first), wipe all cupboard interiors and exteriors, clean worktops, splashbacks, and the sink, and descale the kettle and coffee machine if provided.

Bathroom checklist

Bathrooms attract close scrutiny. Focus on: descaling the shower head, taps, and screen, removing mould from grout and silicone, cleaning the toilet inside and out including under the rim, scrubbing the bath or shower tray, cleaning the sink and mirror, wiping down all surfaces and storage units, and cleaning the extractor fan cover.

Living and bedroom areas

For all living areas: vacuum all carpets thoroughly and treat any stains, wipe all skirting boards and window sills, clean all light switches and plug sockets, dust and wipe all furniture (inside and out if provided), clean windows inside, and vacuum under beds and furniture.

Easy to miss areas

Agents check the details: inside all drawers and cupboards, on top of kitchen and bedroom cupboards, the inside of the oven drawer, behind and under appliances, extractor fan and bathroom ventilation covers, inside the dishwasher (filter especially), and the inside of the washing machine door seal.

Professional vs DIY cleaning

Many tenants attempt an end of tenancy clean themselves, and some succeed. However, most letting agents apply a very high standard, and DIY cleans often miss details that cost deposits. A professional end of tenancy clean from Simply Sorted is competitively priced, and the peace of mind it provides, plus the reduced risk of deposit deductions, is often worth every penny.
